Some dishwashers contain, at least, one motor that is attached to a pump that forces water up into the sprayer arms. When it is in the drain cycle it pushes the water and debris out of the dishwasher, into the sink drain. If there is a garbage disposer, then the water, from the dishwasher will go into the disposer, and down the drain.
Larger food particles wait for the next time you run the dishwasher to be reduced into minute particles that will go down the drain. Most European dishwashers have two motors, one for washing and the other for draining.
Newer dishwashers have a soil-sensor, which checks the water to see if it is still containing debris, from the dishes. If the water is clean, the dishwasher will advance to the next cycle. This is a great recommended feature when you are shopping for a new dishwasher.
If you have a smelly odor it is usually found coming from the garbage disposal and mainly caused by food, from the dishwasher. The best way to eliminate the problem is to run the garbage disposal, for a few seconds, after you finish washing the dishes.
If the dishwasher is overfilling then the float switch has gone bad and stopped functioning. It should be replaced. Please call an appliance technician service person, for this repair. In the Hinsdale area we call: Terry’s Appliance, 630-323-6986.
HOW TO STORE YOUR DETERGENT
It is best not to store the dishwasher detergent, under the sink. It is too warm and moist for it and it will cake up easily. If you have a problem with it caking up, try buying a smaller size next time. If you are curious to see if the water is hot enough for the dishwasher soap to dissolve properly, just run the sink hot water until it is as hot as it will get then fill a glass and put a tablespoon of the soap in the water. If the soap dissolves before it gets to the bottom of the glass, the water is hot enough.
CAUSE OF SPOTTED GLASSES
Spotted glasses may be the cause of a low flow of water, or from hard water. If the glasses are getting a rainbow hue then it is probably from using too much detergent. This can also be caused by water not being hot enough. You can try running the sink faucet, until the hot water starts running out, just before starting the dishwasher. Also opening the dishwasher too soon after it has finished will cause the problem. Remember that the water heater should be set at 120 degrees Fahrenheit for the dishwasher to work at optimum efficiency. Some older model dishwashers put cold water in the dishwasher and the dishwasher must heat the water before it will start. This can take up to 30 minutes in older machines.
One of the main reasons that a dishwasher will not run is that the water has seeped into the electronics. This leakage will burn out the timer or one of the other six control switches. Call an appliance technician repairman and do not let anyone touch the machine.
If the soap dispenser, in the dishwasher, is still full after the dishwasher is finished running, or the soap dish or the rinse-aid dispenser does not empty, it means that the time switch has not sent a signal to the bi-metal switch, that opens it, and that needs to be replaced. Again, this is an electronic switch problem and the appliance technician would be the repairman to call. The homeowner should call a technician when a dishwasher is not turning off, when the door is opened, while it is operating, or the dishes that are not drying completely, which means that the drying fan has stopped functioning, or is not functioning efficiently to do the job.
The homeowner can however eliminate funny noises coming from the dishwasher. This can be done by checking to see if a small object or a pit has fallen into the pump assembly.
If the dishwasher is opened, in the morning, and there is water in it, and it did not run the night before, then it is called “weeping water”. This is usually caused by a faulty fill valve, which will need to be replaced. Dave Soltwisch Plumbing can help you with that.
RACK TOUCH UP
A homeowner can buy a bottle of rack touch up, at any appliance parts department, if the dishwasher racks are getting rusty. New tine ends are also available.
KEEP IT QUIET
If you install a dishwasher, on a tile or cement floor, you can place a piece of indoor-outdoor carpet, under it to muffle some of the noise.
KEEP YOUR DISHWASHER CLEAN
If your dishwasher is looking dingy and has deposits on the walls, just add a cup of the powdered orange drink, “Tang” to the dishwasher and run a cycle through. It will clean the interior and smell refreshing. For an in-depth cleaning, place a bowl with 3 cups of white vinegar, on the bottom rack and leave all racks in place. Run the dishwasher through the wash and rinse cycle only. Do not place the dishes in the dishwasher, when cleaning a dishwasher and turn the machine off before it goes into the drying cycle.
DISHES NOT GETTING CLEAN
If your dishes are still dirty then it is usually caused by obstructed water flow caused by poor loading of the dishes. If it is obstructed water flow you can call Dave Soltwisch Plumbing 630-323-4044.
WHAT KIND OF DETERGENT TO USE
Most dishwasher manufacturers recommend a powdered or granule form of detergent. Gels tend not to perform as well. It is also recommended that refrigerator and dishwasher never be placed together, as they emit heat. You can extend the lifetime of the dishwasher that way. If your dishwasher is full of soapsuds and bubbles, you have used the wrong detergent or tablet. Place 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil into the soapy water to break up the suds and sprinkle salt on the suds to disperse them. Placing ice cubes on the suds will also help to alleviate the problem.

If you want the maximum efficiency from your dishwasher, you need to purchase the right detergent, and never use too much. Try shaking the box; if you can not hear the granules rattling around, it would be best not to buy it. The water heater should be set at 120 degrees Fahrenheit, for the dishwasher to work at optimum efficiency.
